Is It Ever Acceptable To Boo Your Own Team?

We were talking about this on the Rotherham thread and I thought it was worth it’s own topic.

The question explains itself but is it ever acceptable to go your own team or club?

My answer is firmly a yes although as with all these situations people are way too quick to react and sadly it’s generally these people that are pre disposed to being negative. However negativity isn’t necessarily a bad thing, constructive criticism is an essential learning tool. If we were 4-0 down at half time at home to Bolton the team would get rightly booed off and you’d hope they’d react positively and improve. You can’t expect to do your job badly and not be criticised.

However saying all these people often boo way too early and it’s difficult to show your disapproval about one thing and it not get mis construed or affect other. Therefore booing during a game probably isn’t smart but sometimes it’s still necessary and in my opinion acceptable.

Saturday was probably not a great reaction of the fans  to boo grabban being subbed off particularly as it’s been seen as anti Murphy but I maintain it was a bad decision subbing grabban andae got lucky on that one.for reference I didn’t boo although I was quite angry at the time

Forest fans have often lamented that we missed out on MoN.  He's 12 games in and they're booing him (and his judgement...) already.  Those 'same?' fans chanted 'Pull your finger out, Brian' when Brian Clough's Forest Sat' a mere 10th in League 1.  No gratitude?  We finally get 'our man' (a dream ticket of Martin and Roy...) and what do we do?  We show our 'appreciation.'

The point.  There's no gratitude in football.  Does booing help?  Maybe it helps the 'fans' that suffer football 'road' rage.  Guys don't like losing.  And we were.

But it's to do with expectations.  Swansea play football better because they've been in the Premier longer, have 'that' ethos longer, have been better run, LONGER, are doing what Forest decided they didn't want...(a Warburton, take your time to get promoted ethos style of football...)  It looks better.  But how effective were Swansea?  Crap in both ends.  They're ten points behind Forest.  So how successful is their tippy-tippy-tappy football?

Grabban is injured.  He's STILL recovering from being injured.  If you've ever been (or they had been) an amateur or pro' athlete...you don't get over tendon issues after 6 weeks.  More like?  At least half a year...and that's IF you don't flog your tendons in the meantime like Forest were doing with Grabban.

So 'boo-boys', you may not like the sub.  But it was entirely necessary because Grabban is injured.  He's recovering from injury.  He's not 100%.  You don't go from 'no-competitive' football to 100% 6 weeks later.  It's not possible.  It's not realistic.  It's 'good practice' to give a player a run out.  Grabban had 65 minutes.  He did 'nothing' because he's not fit.  Not fully fit.  Murphy came on and got the goals.

Martin knows his players better than the boo-boys.  He knows Grabban's injury is what it is.  To give him some match time and hopefully he'll be closer to 'full' fitness at Rotherham.  (Will Grabban every be 'fully' fit?  No.  Because when you damage a tendon?  You 'manage' it there after.  It will never be the same.)

Murphy came on to do a job.  He did that.  He got the goal that kickstarted Forest's recovery.  He might not be everybody's cup of tea.  The fact is, he got the goal and inspired Forest's victory.  Grabban wasn't going to do that because he isn't fully fit and wasn't for this game.  Just like Murphy shouldn't be used, week in, week out as a match starter.  He hasn't got the stamina for that.  Or the pace.  But when Swansea played themselves out?  Bang.  Got them with the sucker punch.

Martin was right.  The boo-boys were wrong.  Martin knows his players.  The 'boo-boys' don't.

As for being lucky? Aren't Norwich? How many last minute wins have they had? I guess they made their own luck? Or Forest make other teams look lucky.

Didn't Swansea get 'lucky' with the 1st goal, being entirely toothless? They were lucky one of our players gave them the 'gap' to score from.

Martin made his own luck. How many times did we say Aitor doesn't sub' correctly? Martin brings on players who have an impact and 'were lucky' to get the win?

The Championship is all about luck. You make your own lucky.

Martin made the call to bring on height and physical presence of Murphy against a brittle Swansea back line that had Grabban well marshalled for 65 mins.

He gets the 1st and inspires the win.

Manifest destiny, I'd call it.

I understand the frustration when many times over the last few years especially we have had players who obviously could not give a toss con the club out of big wages totally disprespecting the club and more importantly the fans. We all know who they are or were, I never booed but could understand those that did.

What I can’t understand is booing a substitution which was obviously warranted as even I could see Grabban was struggling. There was also booing at half time from some in the Trent End.

We finally have a management team that actually cares about the club, we have owners that are prepared to put their money where their mouth is and build us the stadium we have been dreaming of for years, we are two points off the playoffs and the boo boys have already started.

Unbelievable.

I've been to football matches. (Yes, all true, folks...) Especially Forest ones (the ones that count, perhaps...) where Forest have been dire, average and 'good' (whatever that means in Forest's exile from the old First Division.

I can well understand paying £30 and players being paid vast amounts to 'not seemingly care' and your team loses and you've been working all week and you want to vent.

Part of me, enjoys the theatre of it. 'Yeah, they deserved that at half-time. It was cr*p. Pull your finger out..., Forest...' etc. etc.

But Martin is 'one of us.' (That doesn't make him immune to criticism.) But he has been candid about where Forest are at. And he did compare Swansea to Forest. And he did make the comment it would be nice to have a striker the size of Murphy who was fast and mobile...in another fantasy world.

Ie. The one where Forest's hierarchy gave Aitor Tammy Abraham?

Forest's 'attacking midfield' as signed in the Summer is GONE. G-O-N-E. Car' is here in body only. The other two are in Greece or out of the 16. Soudani? Injured. Or on his 'eternal' way back. having had a knee injury, I could well understand his frustration. He may have been able to do a job for us. But he's injured. Knees. Tendons. Sayonara.

So Martin has to work with what is left. It won't be pretty. But he's been candid about where we are. Better to be the 12th man and help out our 'needs must' pragmatics because none of those 'sexy' signings in the Summer are going to be.

Forest played Car' and Ani' from the start against Ipswich. What did it get us?

Martin threw on more creative players. What did it get us?

Bottom of the table Ipswich camped in Forest's half.

If you want to be in Martin's side? It has to be attitude first. Robust in mind and body. If you can play a bit after that? Well, perhaps that is the next stage. But we'll need a Summer transfer market for that.

We live in a democracy, we as fans can do exactly as we like when it comes to showing our feelings and emotions.

If Mardy Martin isn’t happy, tough. Play more creative football or any creative football for that matter.

Us fans were here long before he came along and will be for a very long time after, I think he needs to remember that.

In reply to the thread question. No it's not. Support the club through thick and thin. Intimidate the opposition not your own players.

Had we lost to Swansea would MoN have said in his post match interview it was all his fault, he knows his players better than anyone else and he completely got his tactics wrong ???????????

Of course not - that was just a bit of hindsight bravado from a manager pissed at people booing. Had we lost he would have been completely different.

Do fans have the right to boo...……..yes they do, they pay their money (not like any employee of NFFC) and so have the right to be unhappy. If you are not upset sometimes you have no passion. That some people want to boo - that's their right to do so.

And...…… I wonder of the booing inspired Murphy and made him, as said above, stretch that fraction more to make the header go in the goal...……….. Who knows eh...….. ????
