What Does Remo Freuler Actually Do? - Salvatore Matrecano - 08-02-2023

Its all about opinions and if we were all the same this would be a boring place.

So come on Marco Polo, Northeast Red etc. Lets be ‘avin yerr!

Well he obviously does enough in the eyes of Steve Cooper to be the first name on the team sheet every week and to be made captain in the absence of Worrall and Yates.

He is indeed Sniffer and to be honest with current options he is in my team too.

But when Shelvey, Yates and Kouyate are all fit does he get in the team?

Will start off with my main argument. Someone said what is so impressive about Freuler is his “work off the ball”.

I would like to counter with the following statement.

“You can’t play well unless you have the football. You know that little football that we play with? They had it more than we did and on our pitch that’s sacrilege.”

Not sure if Freuler does it every match but very often he is the one with most km ran after the 90 minutes.

Great so he runs a lot. So did Diakhaby.

You can run a lot and use it in a positive way SM depending on positions that you run into and take up and the space you drop into etc etc.

Are we going to be serious or are we just here to take the piss and compare Freuler to Diakhaby.

RE: What does Remo Freuler actually do? - Salvatore Matrecano - 08-02-2023

Of course I’m taking the piss and I hope you can tell the thread is meant slightly tongue in cheek. Before someone says it I do not think Freuler is sh*te or even close to it.

Just questioning the contribution. Take running distance covered because that is a fair point. Personally I think Kouyate is a superior footballer to Freuler. But let’s be honest if we can get him fit Kouyate will still run out of steam on 60 mins. Freuler will go for 90 and more, just want to see more from him.

This page with some of his stats is quite interesting. It ranks him as the 11th best ball-stealer.

It also suggests we're using him a bit differently from how Atalanta did as he's attempted way fewer passes per game this season. That could also be as a result of us having less possession than Atalanta did though.

I totally get this thread. I think he is brilliant but can’t explain why. Watching the Leeds game back he was so important in that frantic first half cutting off passing lanes and forcing wide but where is his conductor passing? Interesting him and Colback totally shut off the midfield second half - a very intelligent midfielder. I’m interested in how this thread develops with insights so I can explain more to my son why he should play every week! Other than without him you will see the difference!

He was trying to catch up with his first touch most of the time.

Hes a quality player and a organiser . His work without the ball is brilliant kind of pual mckenna-esque . Thinking Scimica in harts diamond let other players do there job . Every team needs one , If we had a striker that held the ball up a bit better maybe we would control the game more and when we do we might see more of his passinG abilities and control of a game .
