RE: VAR & Crap Referees - Salvatore Matrecano - 27-01-2024

VAR came about for 2 reasons.
The first was the media examining every slightest controversy to the nth degree which has only got worse.
The second was crap managers using referees decisions to excuse their team’s poor performance. For the most part they can’t do that now but still try.

The losers are fans who go to games and see a good part of the joy sucked out of it. I genuinely don’t celebrate goals as much any more because Im constantly thinking was Wood Offside in the build up etc. Thats before you get to the mind numbing stoppages in play which is all you need when its freezing cold.

Terrible awful system. Yes last nights bore draw was far more bearable without VAR and with a decent ref.

Interesting comments there Sal, which I can quite easily relate to.

There is a third reason though and that is the decline in refereeing standards. This is before VAR was brought to the game. Is that because the game has been softened up so much nowadays and the rules and guidelines have become so foggied up that one refs interpretation can differ from anothers, leaving a state of inconsistency from one game to the next. Sadly, some of the shocking refereeing is down to cheating within the game also. Players nowadays are so skilled in the art of diving, feigning injury, gamesmanship and cheating that referees are being so easily hoodwinked into believing everything they see within that split second of action.

VAR is used successfully in other sports like rugby and cricket, but there isnt the same level of cheating in either of those sports, so it can be used to great effect. Sadly, in football, the theatrics and cheating have been allowed to fester for so long, it is widely accepted now as being a part of the game, which is wrong.

RE: VAR & Crap Referees - Salvatore Matrecano - 11-02-2024

My opinion remains it probably still wasn’t a pen for us, Taiwo had lost the ball and if he had done what he should have done and taken a shot it wouldn’t be a debate. The rules or interpretation of them seem to change but Im sure a few years ago its never given certainly not viewed in real time. It would have been soft to say the least.

However this is what boils my piss and I suspect everyone else too.

How the hell was this one a penalty given just a few weeks ago by the SAME REFEREE ironically against Newcastle. Its the inconsistency that drives me mad. We were sold VAR on the premise it removes the inconsistency, Instead its just added to it. Literally the only people in favour are Sky because they can fill endless airtime with debates on it.

I can definitely see why people say the system is bent in favour of big clubs when you see this sort of thing

I can't accept that refereeing standards are getting worse, it's a weird thing at present where everyone seems to bec9ming increasingly short sighted, like when people discount 90s footballers from any greatest ever chats. Referees make mistakes, always have always will but TV from every angle and 24hr TV is leading to scrutiny beyond anything we've seen before.

Let's be honest, refs used to have other jobs and they got hammered by fans every week. Weve recently had some good refs who went on to referee national tournament finals (and Gladiators on TV)

The biggest issue and the one which angers me most is the blanket refusal to follow Rugby Union's example. In every way they've been ahead of the curve in initially being mic'd up and VAR. Of course not all aspects would work to follow but it works, same in league code.

But football is the best sport in the world, it doesn't need to learn from other sports.

And let me be entirely clear, PGMOL bear some responsibility for a refereeing crisis at grass roots level.

RE: VAR & Crap Referees - Paplane - 11-02-2024

Keown made a great point last night on motd. Says the ref wasn't close to the incident so had a poor view. Didn't give the penalty. Var looks at it and its a marginal call but because the ref's decision was no pen, refuses to over-rule him. Why? Can the ref not go to the screen and have a proper look himself, even if he sticks to his decision? These ridiculous scenarios are why VAR is complete waste of time and why it's killing our game.

Just looking at arsenals recent results and we gave them their closest game. We aren’t far away - sort out the set pieces at both ends and we will be OK- I’m sure!

VAR gave Brentford a penalty against us at the City Ground for pretty much an identical incident

RE: VAR & Crap Referees - Sausage Roll - 17-02-2024

Forest have appointed Mark Clattenburg as Referee Analyst. Quite what that role will entail I've no idea.

RE: VAR & Crap Referees - Forest1970 - 17-02-2024

To make sure there's no cheating refs about to which there are plenty.

RE: VAR & Crap Referees - nffc93 - 17-02-2024

RE: VAR & Crap Referees - wassy04 - 17-02-2024

I wasn't as sold on the Taiwo one last week (thought the Elanga one was worse) but today's one I've no idea how that wasn't given.

Also didn't seem like they reviewed that goalkeeper fumble much either.
